What kind of Tai Chi?

Without knowing this, you can only get a VERY generalized answer!

A general overview of Tai Chi Chuan (the martial art) is:

Learn a form.
Continuously perfect the form.
Start doing Push-Hands with a partner.

Learn another form repeating the process.
The “other form” could be either an empty hand technique or a weapon technique.
Another option at my school is to start Baguazhang or Qi Gong techniques.

As long as you practice Tai Chi you will always be PERFECTING your technique’s.

Push-hands improves your ability to read an opponent and apply all of the different moves that you learn in your forms to self defense applications.

In my school learning the form means adding 2 or 3 moves per week and practicing as much of the form as you have learned to date.

The first form learned in my school consists of 60 moves.
Each cycle in my school is 10 weeks.
You learn the first 20 moves in the first cycle and everybody REPEATS the first cycle (often two or three times) before advancing to the next set of moves.

The two things that I heard more often than anything else when starting were:

SLOW DOWN and
LOOSEN UP!
.

What’s a good website for beginners to learn tai chi?

I have never done any tai chi but would like to begin learning. I’m looking for a good beginner’s website with some sort of free instructional content so I can begin learning before I commit to buying a training video.
admin answers:

I am a yang style taijiquan practicioner, and personally i’d suggest finding a reputable instructor. Not to take away from videos asthey are great for your resource and reference materials, but the downside to a video is that if you are doing something incorrectly you have no one there to correct your movement, and in taiji it is fairly easy to learn it incorrectly and it takes twice as long to unlearn your mistakes..

But there are some great Tai Chi sites to refer to and learn more about the Tai Chi art:

admin answers:

Slow down. The best advice anybody can give you is to not rush things. You are learning the routine slowly for a reason and will sorely regret the lack of proper mechanics if you try and rush to get more variety. You should not move beyond what your instructor has given you; one you are not ready if they don’t teach you, two you don’t know what you are doin on your own, and three it is rude and a waste of your instructor’s time if you circumvent their teachings.

Do your silk reeling exercises for at least two hours a day, once in the morning and once inthe evening. And you will grow as a martial artist properly.

This may help you with your exercises:

That’s something you have to do, since YOU are the one writing the paper… You are the one that has to do all the research. This site can only help to give you a better understanding. Your Tai Chi Master must be able to help you. Did you ask him or her?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Hapkido DVD self-defense Instruction!, March 26, 2004
This review is from: Hapkido Ultimate self-defense (DVD)
This is a great 3 DVD set on Korean Hapkido self-defense techniques. With over 3 hours of instruction I was amazed at the amount of material covered in each of the 3 Volumes. Hapkido Master Steve Sexton is a very impressive expert who defintely knows his stuff. His teaching style is easy to understaand and my friends and I were able to pick up the techniques very quickly while watching the DVDs. As a professional bouncer Master Sexton definetly talks from experience as to what Hapkido techniques work in life or death self-defense situations. There is no BS and the techniques are all hard core and explosive. If you want effective self-defense against every type of street attack then this a steal. Having purchased other tapes on Hapkido and various other martial arts this is by far the best in content and value. The production quality is high and with over 3 hours of Hapkido lessons this 3 DVD set definetly gives the best value for your buck!

Last question 1st. I started Tae Kwon Do at age 44. Next question.

It depends on what you mean by Karate. Do you specifically mean those styles that use that name? They are from Okinawa & Japan. Typically, Okinawan styles (Gojoryu, Shorin Ryu & Ishin Ryu) emphasize hand techniques. Japanese styles (Shotokan, Kempo) use about equal hand & foot techniques.
If you are using “Karate” to mean any martial art that emphasizes strikes, you have to include Shaolin Boxing, which is roughly split into northern & southern. Southern style emphasizes hand techniques (It’s where the Okinawans got their style). Northern is more like Tae Kwon Do & Tang Soo Do which are Korean. You will get arguments as to who 1st introduced the emphasis on kicking, but there is no denying that both Noerthern Shaolin & the Korean arts of TKD & TSD (there is very little difference) use a lot of kicks. Find a good instructor in a styls that suits you.

Beware ! I’ve run across many such groups before. Every one I’ve run across had some major issue. I’d be inclined to just stay clear of any group using that pitch. The groups I’ve seen all had both an attitude problem and bad training.

Basically some groups get hung up on the Buddhist concepts that some martial arts may have had at one time. Today you will not find much of that anyway so it is not an issue for those that are Christians. I myself am a Christian, but have never had a problem with my training contradicting my beliefs.

admin answers:

In fighting style both are, if taught well, very hard and effective arts, but Shotokan is very linear, straight, fast and powerful punches and heavy front thrust kicks, Kyokushinkaikan’s creator early years were in Shotokan, so the earlier stuff is similar, but transferred to Goju-Ryu Karate, Which is circular, so the later stuff is lots of round-house kicks, especially low ones, and big shovel hooks.

They do if you know what you are doing.

The usefulness of aikido is something that is usually under debate; specially by outsiders or people that tried two classes and then gave up.
The key to effective aikido is the greatest weapon in combat.
The element of surprise.
Most fighters do not expect you to be turning and twisting as aikido does. They are used to action and immediate frontal reaction. Aikido does not do this Aikido goes outside the sphere of attack, and outside the opponents line of sight and comes at the opponent on point or directions in which he is unable to resist or control what you are doing.
It must be said that the elaborate techniques are indeed not the most practical, and would not be my weapon of choice in a fight either , but they serve their purpose in the learning process.
Often during cross training sessions I’ve had the experience of surprising people and usually spooking them out with a technique that seems to come “out of nowhere” after that most people are not that hungry for a fight anymore.
The philosophy of aikido is indeed peace, but one must consider that these techniques are derived from samurai jiu jitsu, an art designed to injure or kill the opponent with nothing but your bare hands. The origins of the techniques are still present in aikido and when needed they can still be used in that way.

admin answers:

To elaborate more on Jake Lo’s answer. The Katame Waza or Flooring techniques(meaning techniques applied which ends up with the attacker on the floor in a pin or lock) are basically named numerically in Japanese to indicate the order in which the basic techniques are taught. The word Kyu means grade, therefore Ikkyu, Nikyu, Sankyu, Yonkyu and Gokkyu basically means First grade, Second grade, Third grade, Fourth grade and Fifth grade respectively. Although formally, during exams, the student is required to refer to both the numerical designation as well as the descriptive name of the technique, like Ikkyu Ude Osae, Nikkyu Kote Mawashi, Sankyu Kote Hineri or Yonkyu Tekubi Osae and Gokyu Ude Nobashi.

The Nage Waza or “throwing techniques” however are not named numerically and are different in that as the word Nage means throw, the terms attached to it are figurative words describing the type of throw. Irimi Nage is translated as “entering throw”, while Shiho Nage means “Four Corner or Four directional throw”, Koshi Nage means “Hip throw”, Kaiten Nage means “Circular or Rotary throw”, Tenchi Nage means “Heaven and Earth throw”, Kokyu Nage means “Breath throw” and although Kote Gaeshi, which technically means a “twisting wristlock or a wrist turn out lock”, is not a throw per se, but when applied suddenly to a moving attacker usually ends up in a throw, so therefore it is classified under the Nage category. Seionage however as pointed out, comes from Judo not Aikido.

I’d say about 50% But you must understand that most of the throws are in a way, voluntary. By this, I mean that, except for the advanced throwing techniques, which falls under the Irimi Nage(entering throw), Kokyo Nage(breath throw) and Aiki Nage(harmonizing throw) category which breaks an attacker’s balance and makes him tumble from the momentum, most Aikido throwing techniques like Shiho Nage(Four direction throw), Kote Gaeshi(Wrist turn out Throw) and Kaiten Nage(Rotary Throw) for example, are basically joint manipulation or joint lock techniques that with proper control by the practitioner can pin an attacker to the ground without having him fly through the air. The fact that you see Ukes doing somersaults are because they are practicing their breakfalls which basically enables them to defend themselves from the jointlocks and ease the pressure and pain applied on their joints by going along with the jointlock’s momentum as quickly as they can, especially if the Nage applies the jointlock suddenly with some force. In this regard, in my opinion, any of the Basic Aikido floor pinning techniques like Ikkyu, Nikyu, Sankyu, Yonkyu and Gokyu can be converted into throws as well if you know how.
As for atemi, that’s up to the practitioner’s skill and experience, most atemis are merely transition strikes as you flow towards a specific pin or throw. Some advance practitioners who are good at breaking an attacker’s balance sometimes do not need to use atemi after the initial strike, because the centifugal force of his constant spinning and pivoting is usually enough to render the Uke unable to launch any attack because he’s too busy trying to regain his balance.

But then again, everyone learns things in different ways. Maybe you are a visual learner, or an oral learner, or an auditory learner, or a physical learner. (I forget the correct terminology for them all…need some sleep..)

Try learning the terms in different ways. Try combining the elements. Say the words aloud to yourself as you do the actions. Read books and look at videos or pictures. Write down the various terminology on your own. And so on.

THE KARATE KID - The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could´ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother´s (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying – and the feeling is mutual – but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre´s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts ”the karate kid” on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

No. It was just a p**s-poor movie. The plot was terrible and the fact that the girl who played the main character was moving through the martial arts moves with the rapidity of my 90-year-old grandma didn’t help either. Maybe they would have been better off casting a girl who could actually handle the training instead of a girl with just a pretty face and a hot body. But still, the plot was awful.

The Karate Kid: Remake or Continuation?

So a lot of people are saying that the new movie (The Karate Kid) is not a remake of the original first movie Karate Kid. Now I shall give my reasons why it is a remake.

1. It’s about a Single mother and juvinille boy moving to a unfamiliar place.
2. The boy gets picked on while “liking a girl”
3. Older asain man comes to his rescue and eventually becomes his mentorTeacher.
4. Must perform monotnouse tasks to acheive his training goals.
5. makes grand stand at a martial art tournament.
6. Both have the same movie title…
7. In the trailer we saw Jackie Chan act as if he was going to catch the fly with his chopsticks but
instead smacked it with a fly swater. Pun on the first movie Karate Kid.

So do you think the movie is a continuation or a remake?

also the whole cast has been taken out.
how can it be a coninutation if there isnt one of the main characters to continue on in the movie?
Thats why its a remake! because they are REMAKING the characters.

(I realize the that Sensei Miyagi (actor) has died in 2005.)
Fanis, If they were going ot continue the story and changing the teacher that wouldnt make sense. How would you go from being a japanese old man born in okinawa Japan who lives in Cali to a chinese born old man that lives in china??? How would that continue the previous Karate Kid?
Oh and one more thing, if they did call it Kung Fu Kid then everybody will start to bitch about how the “Kung Fu Kid“. is ripping off Karate Kid…

Opinions on the the new Karate Kid movie…?

I wanted to ask around what people think about the remake of Karate Kid. I personally loved the originals; they in a way kind of inspired me to get into martial arts myself, but I am not sure how I feel about the remakes. Jaden Smith IS NOT Ralph Macchio, and Jackie Chan IS NOT Noriyuki Morita. Plus, I think they should have stuck with the production name, Kung Fu Kid, considering it’s about learning kung fu, but I can understand that they are trying to use the name to draw a crowd. I really feel like it’s just Hollywood running out of ideas, BUT…

I kind of hold some hope. I’m not sure they are trying to make a carbon-copy. It looks like they are revamping some plot elements, and it looks approachable. It looks like the producers realized that they aren’t working with the same actors. Jackie Chan doesn’t look like he’s trying to be the wise sage the Mr. Miyagi was; one trailer kind of paints him as a little more eccentric, and Jackie Chan can do eccentric. Plus, I have a little hope for the cast. I’m going to have to give Jaden Smith his props, he had me ballin’ during th pursuit of happiness. And Jackie Chan can do martial arts movies, and I have been waiting for him to do a decent film for years! One last point I have to make is that the movie looks like it will have some decent comedy added to freshen the movie up. One (trailer) shows that it will have some “fish out of water” jokes to play around with, and the homage of Jackie Chan’s character swatting a fly instead catching it with the chopsticks like in the original made me chuckle.

Please weigh in, whether it be your own opinions or responses to my comments. 10 points for the best response!

The original Karate Kid an awesome movie. There was a lot more to it than hokey “marshall arts” – it really wasn’t about “Karate”. Why they are messing with it is beyond me…it’s so ridiculous.

Dont you think they should change the new movie from Karate Kid to the Kung Fu Kid?

Okay I know this is stupid, but I would just like to put it out there. This new movie is coming out with Will Smiths son Jaden Smith who plays this boy who goes to China and gets beat up. Long story short, Jackie Chan plays a rip off of Mr. Miyagi, and teaches Jaden Kung Fu. As if they haven’t made enough remakes already.

Heres my argument, Karate is from Japan, even the name itself is Japanese. But they put it in the main tittle as Karate Kid. It is misleading! Jaden goes to China to learn Kung Fu, but the tittle is called The Karate Kid?! Why dont they change it and represent the proper cultural difference between the two. Karate is from Japan and Kung Fu is from China.
It just make the producers look like idiots, and the whole entire cast look stupid. Even then, Chan suggested they should change the tittle! Please dont tell me people are that culturally ignorant, I mean seriously?

Do you think they should change the tittle or not?

There is a point that everyone seems to be missing here. The original karate kid was one of the few movies ever made to actually express the Budo values. It is still referenced by many traditional martial artists for that reason. The film makers would have had a built-in audience is they had changed the name of the movie to represent the real systems, as many karate-ka would have waited in line to see it. They may still, but it seems like an unnecessary gamble, and a slap in the face to all martial artists. I know I’ve gotten my share of “what’s the difference?” over the years, and it gets under my skin as much as anyone else’s. If they wanted to appeal to mainstream, they should have gone with something like mma, which is always n the press nowadays.

Every martial art has its own unique styles of kicks. It ranges from the simplest kicks of some karate styles to many freestyle kicks of Tae Kwon Do. But the question is, are these martial arts kicks effective enough to use for the street fights? And if they are, then, which one would be the best style or technique to use?

Right on, lots of martial arts kicks are useless for a street fight. Butterfly kicks, spinning heel kicks, flying kicks and even axe kicks. Well, they may look great in class, however these movements are easy to read and also, it leaves you open to getting your leg caught and getting thrown on your head.

Kicks are important mostly in the street fights. However you should use some kicks that differ significantly from what you would often use in martial arts class or even in the UFC octagon. To effectively defend yourself in a real life situation it is best to use the closest point of your body hitting the closest target of your opponent’s body. Obviously you would be in an advantage and it would cancel any spinning kick or even head kicks when you are both on your feet.

When your opponent is closing to you, a straight front kick is better to use, since it can push your opponent back and it will give you an opening to follow-up an assault. While these kicks require much power, they do not give enough damage to your opponent but obviously it can give you the advantage when your opponent is out of balance.

Nonetheless the most effective martial arts kicks for street fights are low kicks. Certainly they are faster and they inflect much pain and damage. The groin kick gives you the most range and it can deliver much pain on any man and gives you an opening to instantly follow through with a number of combos to defeat him quickly. On the other hand, a swift kick to the knee is prominent. This can be delivered through a front or side kick. Breaking the knee of your attacker will quickly disable his ability to fight back and allows you to evade the situation in no time.

With martial art training videos, it is now possible for students to learn Hapkido. Hapkido is a type of martial arts which is practiced in Korea. Although this system involves both the long and close range fighting techniques, the main aim of most engagements is to get close to your opponent for a close strike, lock or throw. The main emphasis is Hapkido is circular motion, control of your opponent and non-resisting movements. When practicing this system, you seek to gain advantage over your opponent through body positioning and footwork to employ leverage, while avoiding the use of strength to counter strength.

Hapkido martial arts video training will teach you both the hard and soft techniques employed in this system. The hard techniques place emphasis on the circular movements rather than the linear movements. The non-resistance technique involves remaining relaxed and avoiding direct opposition to the strength of your opponent. For instance, if your opponent is pushing against your chest, instead of resisting and pushing back, you should avoid direct confrontation by moving in the same direction as the push and using the forward momentum of your attacker to throw them.

You may employ the circular principle to gain momentum for the execution of the techniques in a free-flowing and natural way. When your opponent attacks you in linear motion, such as in a punch or knife thrust, you should redirect the force of your attacker by leading the attack in a circular pattern, thereby adding the power of your opponent to your own. Once you have redirected your opponent’s power, you may perform the execution of various techniques for the incapacitation of your opponent. In Hapkido, you should always learn to view your opponent as an energy entity, rather than as a physical entity. This way, you will find that the bigger your attacker, the more energy they have – which is to your advantage.

Hapkido involves a wide variety of tactics for standing joint locks, striking, pinning techniques and throwing techniques which include both the pure and the joint manipulating throws. There are also some ground fighting styles which focus mainly on escaping, striking and gouging tactics rather than submission, with emphasis on your ability to gain your feet, as well as situational awareness over pins. Mixed martial arts training videos will teach you how to use a series of kicks, hand strikes and footwork to bridge the distance between you and your opponent.

One of the biggest questions about fighting styles is “What is the best martial art for self defense?” We’ve all grown up in a culture that portrays martial arts as a super power or some type of mystical force. You’ve seen the movies of the old master who fights off 20 big criminals without breaking a sweat. I hope this doesn’t burst anyone’s bubble, but that is a bunch of made up garbage. There is nothing mystical about real self defense techniques.

martial arts – A Part of Every Culture

The best known martial arts are those that originated in the Far East. The image of the Asian master is practically tattooed onto our collective subconscious. While there are some great fighters and intricate systems from Asia, martial arts, or true self defense systems don’t all have their origins in Asia. Since the earliest days of mankind, people have been devising the best ways to protect themselves against attacks. From North America to Australia, and every point in between, history has shown that people fight each other and develop systems to do it well.

Most Traditional self defense Systems are Worthless

Here’s what most Karate or other professional self defense instructors don’t want you to know – the stuff they teach you most likely won’t help you one bit in a real attack. If criminals broke into your house to harm you and your family, the jump spin kick that you learn in class would just not work. Real self defense strips away the unnecessary and showy elements of traditional martial arts and concentrates on only doing the real techniques that can save your life in an ugly attack scenario.

Real Violence Requires a Brutal Response

Imagine that you are sleeping in your house; your wife and kids are sleeping peacefully and suddenly you are awakened by a predator breaking into your house to do your family harm. Your still dazed from having just woke up, and confusion breaks out all around you. As you rise from your bed the creep that broke into your house is heading to your room, or your kids room with a weapon in hand. What would you do?

Most people would try something, but very few are prepared to respond swiftly and with deadly force to stop the attacker in his tracks. Even most “black belts” wouldn’t know how to react to such a real world threat. These kinds of things happen every day, and no one ever thinks it will happen to their family, until it’s too late. This is where real self defense comes into play. It’s not a matter of what the best martial art for self defense is anymore – it’s about you being able to respond in a way that puts that sicko down for the count. Do you have what it takes to do that?

The stuff you learn at the strip mall Karate or Tae Kwon Do school will not equip you to handle these types of situations. You need a real system that will teach you the lethal skills needed when you’re at the point of no return.

You are ready to learn the skills you need to defend yourself and your family, aren’t you?
