What kind of Tai Chi?

Without knowing this, you can only get a VERY generalized answer!

A general overview of Tai Chi Chuan (the martial art) is:

Learn a form.
Continuously perfect the form.
Start doing Push-Hands with a partner.

Learn another form repeating the process.
The “other form” could be either an empty hand technique or a weapon technique.
Another option at my school is to start Baguazhang or Qi Gong techniques.

As long as you practice Tai Chi you will always be PERFECTING your technique’s.

Push-hands improves your ability to read an opponent and apply all of the different moves that you learn in your forms to self defense applications.

In my school learning the form means adding 2 or 3 moves per week and practicing as much of the form as you have learned to date.

The first form learned in my school consists of 60 moves.
Each cycle in my school is 10 weeks.
You learn the first 20 moves in the first cycle and everybody REPEATS the first cycle (often two or three times) before advancing to the next set of moves.

The two things that I heard more often than anything else when starting were:

SLOW DOWN and
LOOSEN UP!
.

What’s a good website for beginners to learn tai chi?

I have never done any tai chi but would like to begin learning. I’m looking for a good beginner’s website with some sort of free instructional content so I can begin learning before I commit to buying a training video. I’m particularly interested in the Yang style but anything is fine.

admin answers:

I am a yang style taijiquan practicioner, and personally i’d suggest finding a reputable instructor. Not to take away from videos asthey are great for your resource and reference materials, but the downside to a video is that if you are doing something incorrectly you have no one there to correct your movement, and in taiji it is fairly easy to learn it incorrectly and it takes twice as long to unlearn your mistakes..

But there are some great Tai Chi sites to refer to and learn more about the Tai Chi art:

New lavishly illustrated T’ai Chi ebook (255 color pages) & 3 substantial bonuses (a unique PowerPoint presentation of all the moves, plus 2 special full-color reports). Written by a doctor of Buddhist Studies and ex-bodyguard to the Dalai Lama…read more here

Robert asks…

Recommended beginner Tai Chi routine ideas?

I’ve been doing Tai Chi for about a few weeks now, and I am absolutely in love with it. I was wondering if any of you would have good ideas for extra forms or stances which I may try and add to my routine to make it more diverse!

Thank you for any help in advance.

admin answers:

Slow down. The best advice anybody can give you is to not rush things. You are learning the routine slowly for a reason and will sorely regret the lack of proper mechanics if you try and rush to get more variety. You should not move beyond what your instructor has given you; one you are not ready if they don’t teach you, two you don’t know what you are doin on your own, and three it is rude and a waste of your instructor’s time if you circumvent their teachings.

Do your silk reeling exercises for at least two hours a day, once in the morning and once inthe evening. And you will grow as a martial artist properly.

This may help you with your exercises:

See the masters at work and do not give up!

Paul asks…

Tai Chi and self-defense?

What are some names of moves in Tai Chi that can be used for self defense? I have to write a paper on this like I already know the origins of Tai Chi I just need to know different types of Tai Chi that can be used in self defense and the form names of moves that I can use for self defense. And where you found the information.

Like an example is:
Move Name is Grasp Sparrow’s Tail, Ward Off, Left. I found it in the book Tai Chi for Beginners by Claire Hooton on page 11

admin answers:

All of Tai Chi is self defense.

That’s something you have to do, since YOU are the one writing the paper… You are the one that has to do all the research. This site can only help to give you a better understanding. Your Tai Chi Master must be able to help you. Did you ask him or her?
